About Ylang Ylang Essential oil
Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) trees originated in the Philippines but are now distributed throughout tropical Asia. They are small trees with large leaves and branches that weep like a willow. The essential oil comes from the small flowers. Although many varieties of the species are cultivated for their scent, it is the ones with the smallest flowers that have the most subtle perfume. Wild varieties have little perfume. The scent is sweet and very floral; it is much sought after in perfumery.
Ylang ylang is good for the hair because it normalizes the sebaceous glands (the glands that produce oil). This same property makes it good for use on oily skin. It is often used as an aphrodisiac while also relaxing to the body and mind. Ylang ylang essential oil is good for high blood pressure and intestinal problems. It is also used as a general tonic and for depression. In the Philippines the flowers were made into a pomade (flower infused oil or fat) and spread over the body to prevent fever and infection. The flowers have also been used in the tropics mixed with coconut oil to protect hair from salt water when swimming.
